Seattle’s first Pride Week kicked off in 1974, to honor the June, 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, in which the LGBT community rebelled against police invasion of a popular gay bar and gathering space. At the time, law enforcement frequently raided LGBT hubs, arresting minors, anyone in drag, and even women they deemed insufficiently or scantily dressed. Today, advocates and allies come together all over the nation to commemorate and continue the fight. Seattle’s tribute spans the entire month of June, with multiple events throughout the city. It all culminates on the 24th with a parade that stretches down 4th Avenue, and eventually winds to Seattle Center for musical acts, DJs, drag queens, and speeches by local activists.
