In 2006, The Seattle International Dance Festival grew out of artistic director Cyrus Khambatta’s desire to harness the creativity and energy intrinsic in festival environments. Three years later, the festival received a grant from the Department of Neighborhoods to reinvigorate South Lake Union through the arts. This grant allowed the event to expand in size and impact, allowing for more performances, dance education and instruction programs for underserved communities. Today, it’s a 16-day event focused on innovation and diversity, and featuring both local and international artists. Here are a few of the programs we’re looking forward to.
Opening Party + Shuffle – 6/7, 8PM
Held at 415 Westlake, a downtown Seattle event space, the opening party centers on the Shuffle event, where dancers and musicians are picked out of a hat to collaborate and improvise on the spot. For $15, you’ll also enjoy a DJ, open bar, and delicious food until midnight.
James Ray Residency Project – 6/12, 6/13, & 6/14 at 7:30PM
The James Ray Residency Project offers five artists a year-long program of support: retreats, free rehearsal space, development, publicity and marketing, and a culminating fully produced show at the SIDF. This year’s artists are Daniel Costa Dance, Julie Tobiason, Version Excursion Dance, Coriolis Dance, and Tectonic Marrow Society. Enjoy these up-and-coming artists at Seattle’s Erickson Theatre.
Spotlight on Contemporary Ballet – 6/19 & 6/20 at 7:30PM
Informed by elements of classical ballet and modern dance, contemporary ballet allows for more freedom of expression than classical ballet. Expect floorwork and athleticism from dancers like Andre Alabastro, Angelica Generosa, and Eva Stone.
Art on the Fly – 6/9
Held in Denny Park, this free, outdoor event celebrates art, dance and food. Enjoy breakdancing, dance classes, interactive events, and the South Lake Union Market. This year’s program is sponsored by Amazon, Vulcan, Umpqua and City Arts.
